When Karen and Joe Wince set up a table with their facial hair care products at events, it’s usually women who come up to them.

That’s because women are often the reason men don’t grow facial hair, and with the Wince’s products, facial hair gets softer, sweeter smelling and often cleaner, said the owners of Bearded Botanicals, a company providing beard-care products.

The natural oils in the products they make condition the skin and facial hair, keeping skin hydrated and clean, Joe Wince said.

Bearded Botanicals sells beard oils, beard balms, whisker whips, whipped beard balm and more, through its website, www.

They’re not just for beards, either.

“If you have skin, you can use our products,” Joe Wince said, his wife, Karen Wince, adding that she uses them on her face.

Joe Wince, who has a beard, first started making beard oil in 2013, just for himself at first. He often made extra and distributed it among his friends, and it grew from there, as he had much encouragement to start selling it.

The couple sells their products online and at craft shows, Westwood Barber also carries some of their products.

The Winces are very dedicated to their product; they’re constantly researching about the ingredients and hope to educate others about beard care.

Making the products fit with the Wince’s lifestyle, as they can food, do gardening and have a fruit orchard at their home in Lima. Though they have experience eating food they’ve grown, starting to make products for facial hair was “trial and error and research” at first, Joe Wince said.

They also started growing many of the all-natural ingredients they use in their own home and garden.

Bearded Botanicals was nominated to be one of Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted’s monthly business profiles, and was featured as one in November, during which the profiles had a veteran-owned theme.

Joe Wince served for eight years in the Marines as an aircraft rescue firefighting specialist. He enjoyed his time in the Marines and said it gave him drive, attention to detail and discipline to follow through, which has helped with Bearded Botanicals.

The recognition from Husted’s office was unexpected for the Winces.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Joe Wince said.

Tim Monaco, regional liaison with Husted’s office, gave the Winces a letter from Husted on Thursday.

“Bearded Botanicals is an inspiration to others,” he read from the letter, adding that it was the only business in Northwest Ohio recognized this month.

The company offers “beard care for every budget.”

“We take pride in offering a lot of ingredients and a lot of research into our products at a low price,” Karen Wince said.
