Lisa Carson is on a mission to make plus size women in the community look and feel their best with her new boutique in uptown.
Carson opened Curvy Closet & Accessories Boutique at 232 S. Lafayette Street on Small Business Saturday at the end of November. Even after losing some of her former weight, Carson describes herself as a “curvy lady.”
She opened the store with the goal of providing plus size women with clothes that are stylish and flattering, something she believes is often too hard to come by.
“I know what it’s like to not be able to find clothes that fit and look good,” Carson said. “I feel that if you look good on the outside, you’re going to feel good about yourself on the inside.”
While there are other boutiques specializing in women’s clothing in the area, Carson said her store stands out because she specializes in plus size clothing, from sizes 1X to 6X.
Back in 2012, Carson dreamed of opening a clothing store for plus size women. At the time, she didn’t have the funds to start a clothing store, so she begin selling handbags and jewelry at flea markets, events and online under the moniker Curvy Closet Accessories.
Carson jumped at the opportunity to open her store in uptown when the opportunity presented itself this year, and her patrons over the first month have been equally excited about the store’s opening.
“The reception’s been awesome,” she said. “I’ve had all kinds of customers come through the door saying, ‘It’s about time.'”
The business owner had over 20 years of experience in retail management prior to starting her new business. Carson describes her style of customer service as “old school,” saying she is always willing to take suggestions and work with customers to provide the products and service they want.
