Fashion Meets Function for Mom and Baby

Sisters Jacquelyn and Rachel Rabenberg opened the doors of Hush Boutique at the Paramount Retail Center on Eighth Avenue Monday.

The co-owners are fashionistas who originally wanted to open a women’s clothing boutique, but decided to focus on moms, their young children and those who are expecting.

Inspiration comes from how the two dress Rowan, who is Jacquelyn Rabenberg’s 19-month-old daughter.

“I think it’s cute when kids are wearing what adults would be wearing,” Jacquelyn Rabenberg said.

The sisters acknowledge not every mom wants what’s trendy, so there’s a cross-section of baby basics available, too.

Children’s clothes are available up to size 4T.

There are stylish clothes for moms-to-be as well. There aren’t a lot of maternity-specific clothing options, Jacquelyn Rabenberg said.

“These are clothes designed to fit a pregnant body,” said Rachel Rabenberg, who said the alternative often means bigger sizes of women’s clothing that are ill-fitting.

The clothes can be worn after baby is born, too.

Paramount, which is also home to Flatlanders Kitchen and Tap House and Four Brushes pottery studio, was chosen as the location of Hush Boutique because of the growth in the area, Rachel Rabenberg said.

The space allowed for a lot of personalization of the boutique, which features open ceilings and a circular sofa in the middle.

A grand opening celebration is to come in a few weeks and more merchandise is being brought in.

The sisters envision the boutique as a place where moms can meet to talk to one another or as an event space for baby showers.

Rachel Rabenberg brings in her expertise as an esthetician and the boutique sells Mambino Organics, a pregnancy skincare line. Popular items include swaddle blankets, diaper bags and customized mobiles.

Amanda Cantwell started making headbands for her daughter, Reagan, as a hobby. Less than a year later, it has blossomed into a business called Gracie’s Boutique.

There’s no brick-and-mortar store, but the creations will be available at Hush Boutique and can be purchased online at graciesboutique.com.

Gracie’s was started at the beginning of December, and the winter collection is available.

She estimates she’s sold about 30 headbands in just a few weeks. The headpieces come in four sizes for newborns to those 9-months-plus.

Cantwell makes custom orders, too, and recently made some for older girls. Soon, tutu skirts will be available on the Gracie’s site, and Cantwell wants to make baby leggings this summer as well.

The headbands are made from hypoallergenic materials to ensure comfort for young wearers.
