WWR Article Summary (tl;dr) There’s been plenty of coverage regarding the popularity of blow dry bars popping up in major cities across the country. But what about small(er) towns and regions? This story follows the experience of one Texas gal who studied in New York and has since returned home to open up her own blow dry bar.  Way to go April!

Odessa native April Rubio will fulfill her dream of bringing a touch of the big city to Midland when her business, Blush and Blow Makeup and Dry Bar, opens this summer.

“I wanted to bring that big city type of work to Midland-Odessa,” Rubio said. “I’ve been doing makeup for over five years and I really wanted to do something as far as the makeup part goes, and I thought the dry bar would go along with it really well.”

Blush and Blow will employ three makeup artists, who also will offer makeup classes, Rubio said. Three hair stylists will wash and blow dry clients’ hair into one of the salon’s signature styles for less than $40. The full-face makeup service is $65.

“I’m looking forward to giving clients around here the experience that I experienced in New York,” said Rubio, a 2012 graduate of Makeup Forever Academy in New York City.

Rubio said that her course work partially comprised of runway modeling, film and television makeup. The make-up varies as runways are well-lit and require a different type of application than film make-up, which has to survive the scrutiny that high-definition television screens now offer.

The academy brought in a film director who made short films so Rubio and other students could apply their course work in a real-world setting. It also led to Rubio becoming an assistant make-up artist for a Ford model.

“I kind of just want to focus on giving women and teenagers that experience of enhancing their beauty with hair and makeup,” Rubio said.

The business will feature a private room that clients can rent for bridal parties, bachelorette parties or quinceneras. Complimentary wine will be served to clients of drinking age, Rubio said.

Her background helped her determine prices, as the makeup academy included a business side of it, Rubio said.

“I kind of already knew exactly what I wanted, what lines I wanted, what retailers I wanted, so I will also have makeup, hair and skin-care lines,” Rubio said.

The main difficulty in bringing the big city to West Texas was finding a location.

“It’s taken me two years … and it’s pretty much all about location that’s taken this long,” Rubio said.

Construction will begin this month at the Red Oak Plaza by the new H-E-B; the goal is to open by mid-May.
