Dear Dr. June:
I am feeling somewhat frustrated. I work at a job where there really is no opportunity for promotion, and I don’t feel satisfied with what I’m doing. It’s a steady income, and that is important to me even though I think I have an entrepreneurial spirit. What steps can I take to overcome my fear of stepping out and following that spirit?

Dear DL:
Frustration kicks in when we are in a situation that is hindering us from finding satisfaction. Obviously, you are not satisfied in your current employment situation. That unsatisfying feeling will continue until you do something to release it.

Another word you mentioned is fear, which can be paralyzing. This is a good description since you are not moving. So, my first piece of advice to you is to get moving regardless of your fears and uncertainties.
This does not mean jump and leave your job. It does mean get it in gear and start going places like networking and chamber of commerce events. Zoom is the new go-to, and many of these types of events are done through the computer, so you join from home if that makes you feel safe. Find out if you can make connections that benefit you in your next stage, which is putting together a game plan.

Write down what you want to do and the steps it will take to get there. Bounce ideas off other professionals and make a visual of your business. Go ahead and get started, and then every day do something that pushes you toward that goal, even if it’s just sending an email or making notes.

If you really want to do it, take action. Otherwise, you will be in your comfortable/uncomfortable job with no business or real career.
