Legal Nurse Hopes To Help Local Lawyers

Research can be one of the more tedious tasks an attorney — or a paralegal — can do to prepare for a case.

And medical records can be some of the most dense and confusing material legal professionals have to decipher.

But that is where St. Cloud resident Jessica Anderson hopes her new business will be able to help.

Anderson has recently embarked on a new career path, blending her love of medicine with a desire to become an entrepreneur.

Anderson is the owner of Jessica M. Anderson, Certified Legal Nurse Consultant & Associates, a business designed to assist attorneys prep for cases that involve medical records.

A certified legal nurse consultant serves as a medical expert in cases and can assist attorneys and other legal professionals navigate medical charts. That might be helpful in cases of product liability, personal injury, workers’ compensation and in certain criminal cases.

Anderson, who has been a nurse for almost 17 years, specializes in neurology and adult care. She has spent almost a decade at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as well as time at St. Cloud Hospital. Anderson teaches in a program that gives registered nurses their bachelor’s degree.

She is certified through the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. Anderson is one of 30 Minnesota professionals in the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and the only one in the St. Cloud area.
She believes her background in medicine will help attorneys navigate medical documents.

“I can also work with clients and help prepare them for court by doing mock trials,” Anderson said. “I can also testify as an expert from the nursing medical standpoint (in my areas of expertise). Or I can find testifying experts in the medical field.”
Currently, Anderson has two clients in St. Cloud.She hopes to make her business a full-time occupation.

“I feel like there is a need in the St. Cloud area,” she said. “And I want to show the community (and the legal community) the benefits of certified legal nurse consultants.”
