The former first lady’s office said Obama’s time at the White House — marked by advocacy for women and girls and pushing for healthier lifestyles across the US — had made her “one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era.”

“Becoming” chronicles Obama’s youth on the south side of Chicago, her life as an executive balancing work and children, and her tenure in the White House alongside her husband as he led the US “through some of its most harrowing moments,” her office said.

“I talk about my roots and how a girl from the South Side found her voice. I hope my journey inspires readers to find the courage to become whoever they aspire to be,” Obama wrote in a tweet.

Barack and Michelle Obama both signed book deals with Penguin Random House early last year. Though financial terms were not disclosed at the time, the Financial Times reported that bidding had reached 60 million dollars, a record for any presidential memoir.

Most first ladies in recent history have penned memoirs, including Hillary Clinton (“Living History”) and Laura Bush (“Spoken from the Heart”).
