The different ways men and women think will be the focus of an upcoming workshop
“Creating an Effective Workplace through Gender Intelligence” is being offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 16 at the Kirkwood Hotel and Event Center in Cedar Rapids by Iowa Women Lead Change, an organization that promotes women’s leadership in the Corridor.
Diane Ramsey, CEO of Iowa Women Lead Change, said attendees will learn the science behind how men and women make decisions, and its importance in building more inclusive worksplaces.
“You can find that women often will process alternative bits of information and will be more inclusive in gathering others’ opinions and ideas before formulating a decision,” Ramsey said. “Men often are more inclined to process and make decisions more quickly.”
Participants will be involved in a series of exercises “to help them deploy their newly developed gender intelligence skills,” Ramsey said.
Ramsey encourages men and women who work together to attend the workshop.
“What we want is teams to come in who work together to learn about this so that they get an appreciation of the other and in turn they can take these learnings back and apply them across the organization,” she said.
The workshop is $250 per person or $2,000 for a group of 10. For more information or to register, go to www.IWLCLeads.org/GenderIntelligenceWorkshop.
Mike Wilkins, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Cedar Rapids-based United Fire Group, will attend. He said he manages a diverse group of people who work remotely and at the local office, and sees value in learning about the differences in men and women’s thought processes.
“I think we all probably think we know more about gender intelligence than we actually do,” Wilkins said. “I look at it as a learning opportunity. I think the real value will be finding out what I don’t know.
