Mary Barra repeats as Fortune’s Most Powerful Woman.
The General Motors chairman and CEO topped the magazine’s list of Most Powerful Women for the second consecutive year. She rose 27 spots to No. 2 on the annual list in 2014 after becoming the auto industry’s first female CEO earlier that year.
The rest of the Top 5: Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo chairman and CEO; Marillyn Hewson, president, chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin; Ginni Rometty, president, chairman and CEO of IBM, and Abigail Johnson, president and CEO of Fidelity Investments.
Fortune wrote of Barra: “Mary Barra repeats as Fortune’s Most Powerful Woman after a year of dramatic improvement at the $152.4 billion in revenues auto giant. She ably steered GM through the ignition switch crisis that hit in 2014, made the tough decision to end operations in Russia and invested in ride-sharing company Lyft. She also bought Valley start-up Cruise Automation for $581 million. Oh, and she posted record profits in 2015 of $9.7 billion.
“What she hasn’t done is boost the stock, which remains flat even as markets hit new highs. As an extra vote of confidence, GM’s board handed her the chairman title in January.”
GM earned $2.9 billion in the second quarter of 2016, the company’s highest earnings for any quarter since emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2009.
