British Prime Minister Theresa May sent a message of support to thousands of people who joined a March4Women on Sunday, mocking those who have dubbed her “a bloody difficult woman.”
“Here’s to all the ‘bloody difficult women’ out today on the March4Women,” May wrote on Twitter.
She added a photograph apparently showing a screen grab of a Google search for “bloody difficult woman” with a Wikipedia entry for “Theresa May, British prime minister” underneath.
At least 10,000 people joined Sunday’s march to London’s Trafalgar Square, where London mayor Sadiq Khan and several other opposition Labour politicians were among the speakers.
Khan said there was a “terrific turnout with thousands of Londoners of all backgrounds coming together to reaffirm our commitment to achieving true gender equality.”
“I’m marching for the women who suffer in silence,” said Labour lawmaker Dawn Butler, who also spoke at the event.
“I’m marching to say we will hear you, we are a part of you and each of us must hold our hands out and help one another,” Butler said. “I’m marching for the hidden history of women.”
Labour’s shadow home secretary Emily Thornberry tweeted a photograph of Helen Pankhurst, great grand-daughter of suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, speaking in the square.
Thornberry said she was “so proud to be on the March4Women today with the modern-day suffragettes.”
The suffragettes were a protest group who campaigned for votes for women in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
