Regina Moon knows all about becoming a chameleon.
At the 10th annual Women’s Leadership Conference, the former vice president and chief operating officer of Griffin Communications shared her inspiring story of starting over.
“At that time I found myself faced with a change and a severance package,” Regina Moon said.
“I also found myself unemployed for the first time in my adult life, and unable to work in my chosen field.”
Moon, who is now chief executive officer of the Eastern Oklahoma Region American Red Cross, spoke to around 130 women at the Indian Capital Technology Center on Wednesday afternoon.
During the conference, women from the Muskogee area got the chance to learn from Moon as well as many other successful local women.
“It was a wonderful and enlightening day with local leaders,” said Treasure McKenzie, president of the Muskogee Chamber of Commerce.
“Being a chameleon, changing jobs, changing circumstances, changing the world and changing your colors” was the title of the presentation Moon shared.
Moon worked for Griffin Communications, the company that operates KOTV-Channel 6 and KQCW-Channel 12/19 in Tulsa.
At the height of her communications career, a change came to Moon’s life in the form of company consolidation.
After almost 20 years in the broadcasting business, Moon said she found herself unemployed for the first time in her adult life.
After a grueling job search, including 100 in-person interviews, Moon found a position with the Red Cross in 2009.
“The reward at the end of that road, was a door that opened and I stepped through to become the CEO of the Eastern Oklahoma Region Red Cross,” Moon said.
After Moon’s presentation, a panel discussion featured leadership conference “legends.”
Nine women selected by a committee, each with knowledge and experience as leaders, were asked questions and were able to share their stories.
“There was so much wisdom and experience in that room,” McKenzie said.

“It was really special.”
The legends were Sue Harris, Ann Ong, Norma Noble, Roberta Scott, Marjorie Szabo, Evelyn Hibbs, Janey Cagle Boydston, ShIronbutterfly Ray, and Kathy Hewitt.
The women discussed topics ranging from juggling work and family to how to keep emotions separate from work.
“It’s great to be able to learn from each other and feel validated that we all struggle with work and home life,” McKenzie said.
