Let’s Talk Taxes lunch and learn is the first expert-driven event presented by the Newton Women Working From Home organization.
Guest speaker Sherri Griggs from Dimensions Accounting will be on hand to discuss the ins and outs of taxes for those working from home.
“We’re continuing to work to grow the network of women in the area who are working from home. We found that those attending the meetings needed some expert advice and we thought that this would be a good time of year to bring in Sherri and talk about taxes,” said Tracy Schuster, a founder of the women’s group.
Griggs, a nearly 20-year veteran of the tax business, started her own full-time business in 2009. She will bring with her years of experience working with those who work from home, as well as her full background in the tax industry.
Topics that Griggs will discuss include items that are available for deduction — including a home office area, mileage and cell phone use. She will also discuss different types of business structures that are available to those working from home, such as a S Corp and an LLC.
“(Often) they don’t know what they can deduct and what they can’t. When you are working at home your personal expenses kind of blend with your business expenses, so I can help them figure out which part is deductible and what isn’t,” Griggs said.
Griggs said the biggest mistake people make when doing their taxes is either trying to deduct too much or not deducting enough. She will discuss record keeping and recommend best practices to be ready for tax time.
“We will have a question and answer time following Sherri’s presentation to give people an opportunity to ask questions,” Schuster said.
Newton Women Working From Home is also looking to expand the group to those who are considering working from home. Whether they are branching out on their own, working in direct sales or still under the umbrella of a formal company, the group welcomes those who manage non-traditional schedules to discuss the challenges and advantages of working out of the home.
“Whether exploring it with the company they work for or as an entrepreneur, we want to give them a chance to connect with the women in the area that are currently doing it,” Schuster said.
