Giving Girls A Helping Hand In The Digital World

By Cindy Kent
Sun Sentinel.

Who: Ceci Dadisman, director of marketing and public relations at the Palm Beach Opera, recently launched the West Palm Beach chapter of Girl Develop It, a national nonprofit that provides mentorship and hands-on instruction to women who want to learn Web and software development.

Why this organization is important: Many women feel they don’t have the knowledge to perform within the digital space, yet many jobs require some sort of coding skills, whether to update an existing website or create an email newsletter. So, while careers in computer programming and software development are rapidly growing, the percentage of women in the field remains low.

Top goal: Because this chapter is new, getting the word about Girl Develop It is critical. There are many who will benefit from its programs.

Why this organization resonates with me: Because not only is it a nonprofit, but also because the mission is specifically to empower women to develop their own software or website.

Advice to young professionals seeking community engagement: Attend as many learning and networking events in your field as possible to meet people in your industry and continue to learn.
